Best Dinosaur Toys for a 3-Year-Old That Can Be His Best Friend

At three, one toy starts to matter more than all the others. He carries it from room to room, he tells it what is happening next, and he notices the moment it is not there. A dinosaur can take that job: a soft one he can hold on to, and one that comes with him when he leaves the house. Below are five picks from our own line, and how to tell which one he is going to keep.

What makes a dinosaur toy a 3-year-old's best friend?

A plush dinosaur that comes with its own backpack does more than a plush dinosaur on its own, because it is the one that is actually with him. At three, a soft toy becomes a best friend by being there โ€” at the park, in the shop, at his grandparents', at bedtime. A plain plush usually stays on the sofa, because once his hands are full there is nowhere to put it. A dinosaur that rides on his own backpack goes where he goes: he puts the bag on, the dinosaur comes along, and he takes it off whenever he wants to hold it. In the evening it comes out of the bag and goes to bed with him. Same soft toy, one difference โ€” it never has to stay home.

Three is the age when this starts to matter. The CDC's milestones for three-year-olds include calming down within about ten minutes after you leave him, at a childcare drop-off for example, and noticing other children and joining them to play. Both of those happen away from you. Both are easier when something familiar came along in his hands.

Which dinosaur it turns out to be is his decision, not yours. The American Academy of Pediatrics, writing about emotional development in preschoolers, says to give a three-year-old choices wherever you can, and to keep them narrow โ€” two or three options, or he is overwhelmed and cannot decide. Two dinosaurs on the table is exactly the right size of decision to hand over.

The part that is yours is quieter. You cannot make a toy into his best friend, and it is often not the one you expected. What you can do is make it possible for that toy to be present: something he can carry himself, that survives being dropped on a sidewalk, and that does not get left behind because there is nowhere to put it.

The picks

1. Best "He Takes Him Everywhere"

Naturally KIDS kids backpack with removable brown plush T-Rex, for a three-year-old boy

Naturally KIDS Toddler Backpack with Plush Dinosaur Toy

This is the one in the photo above, and the one most three-year-olds meet first. The brown T-Rex is removable: he rides on the bag on the way out, comes off to be carried under an arm at the shop, and comes out of the bag again at bedtime. Listed for ages 2 to 5, with padded adjustable straps and a zip a three-year-old can work himself. The T-Rex itself is soft brown corduroy, light enough to hold in one arm the whole way home.

2. When he is out of the house all day

The same small backpack, a green T-Rex instead of a brown one, and side pockets. The dinosaur is removable exactly the same way, so it comes off the moment he wants to hold it. A water bottle goes in the side rather than in with everything else, so it comes out on a bench without unpacking the bag first. There is a reflective patch on it as well. Listed for ages 2 to 5. For days that run from the morning to somebody's house and back, this is the version that carries the day and the dinosaur at once.

3. If the T-Rex is not his dinosaur

By three a lot of children have picked a side, and it is not always the T-Rex. This is a green triceratops, soft in the same way, and it comes off the backpack whenever he wants to hold it. Listed for ages 2 to 5, with straps that adjust as he grows. If he has already told you which dinosaur is his, believe him โ€” the one he named is the one that will end up in his bed.

4. The one he picked himself

A pink triceratops, and plenty of three-year-olds go straight for it. Everything works the same way: it comes off, it gets held, it goes back on. Listed for ages 2 to 5. Handing him the choice is most of what makes a toy stick โ€” chosen is not the same as given.

5. Some boys want a crew, not one friend

Naturally KIDS dinosaur backpack with a plush T-Rex and four small plush dinosaurs

Naturally KIDS Toddler Dinosaur Backpack with Plush Dinosaur Toys

A backpack with a plush T-Rex on the front, and four more dinosaurs to go inside it: a mosasaurus, a spinosaurus, a triceratops and a stegosaurus. The T-Rex is removable like the others, and the small four travel in the bag. Some three-year-olds do not want one friend, they want a group with names and an argument already running. He decides who is coming today, packs them, carries them, and takes them out again when he arrives. Listed for ages 2 to 5.

How to make a dinosaur the one he keeps

These are the points the American Academy of Pediatrics keeps coming back to about routines and growing independence, arranged around a toy you want him to hold on to.

  1. Let him choose which dinosaur. Writing about preschoolers, the AAP says to give choices whenever you can but to keep the options simple โ€” narrow them to two or three, or he is overwhelmed and unable to decide. Show him two and let him take one.
  2. Let it come with you every time. A toy becomes a best friend by being present, and that only happens if it is allowed out of the house on ordinary days, not just good ones.
  3. Let the backpack do the carrying. His hands are needed for holding yours, opening doors and picking up stones. On the bag, the dinosaur comes along without anybody having to carry it.
  4. Build it into the daily routine. The AAP puts routines first for exactly this reason: children do best when they know what to expect. Whatever your order is โ€” bag on, shoes, door โ€” keep it the same one.
  5. Praise the effort, not the result. On getting dressed and getting ready, the AAP's advice is to praise your child's efforts and successes. Taking the dinosaur off the bag and putting it back is a small job he finished by himself, and it is worth saying so.
  6. Take it out of the bag at bedtime. The day ends with the dinosaur in his arms rather than in a cupboard, and that is the half of the friendship a backpack cannot do.

The one that comes with him

The dinosaur he keeps is the one that is with him, and that is the whole reason to put it on a backpack. A plush on a shelf is a toy for the house: loved in the evening, left behind in the morning. A plush that comes off his own bag is at the park, in the shop, at daycare, and back in his arms at bedtime. That is what turns a soft toy into his dinosaur rather than one of his toys. Any of the five above does it. If he has already named a dinosaur or a colour, start there, and let him carry it himself from the first morning. We make these for children who take their friend along, and for the people carrying everything else.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The dinosaur is removable and a three-year-old manages it on his own โ€” off to be carried or hugged, back on when he wants his hands free. Nothing needs an adult, and there is nothing small to lose in the process. Most children work it out on the first day and never ask for help with it again.

The small backpacks are listed for ages 2 to 5, so three sits comfortably in the middle. The straps adjust, which is what keeps it fitting as they grow. At three they can get it on and off without help, and that is usually the reason people are buying it in the first place.

It holds snacks, a water bottle, wipes, a small toy, or a thin book, and a small lunchbox. It is deliberately toddler-sized โ€” enough for a daycare day, not for school.

Yes. Made for kids and toddlers, it's third-party tested to meet safety requirements for a plush toy and a kids backpack. Meets U.S. ASTM F963-23 and EU EN71 standards, so you can feel confident your little one is safe using it every day.

Yes โ€” it's machine washable in cold water, a lifesaver for toddlers and older kids. The removable plush toy stays soft and cuddly wash after wash, and the backpack holds its shape.
